Storm Season and the Control Board

A board that died during a storm and a board that has been getting stranger for months are two different repairs. The history matters.

Jacksonville averages roughly sixty-eight thunderstorm days in a year. Not sixty-eight storms — sixty-eight days on which thunder is heard. Through the summer that is most afternoons, and it goes on for months.

Appliance electronics sit at the far end of a long branch circuit with no protection of their own. A strike does not have to hit the house to matter. A strike into the ground nearby, or into distribution equipment down the street, puts a transient on the line, and a transient does not care that your oven is switched off.

What a surge actually does

Rarely does it destroy a board outright with a scorch mark you can see. Far more often it takes out one component — a relay driver, a triac, a low-voltage supply section — and leaves the rest working. That produces the failures that sound absurd on the phone.

An oven that heats on bake and not on broil. A refrigerator whose compressor runs but whose ice maker has forgotten it exists. A hood with working lights and a dead fan. A control panel that responds to some buttons and not others. In every one of those, power is clearly arriving and most of the machine is clearly alive, which is why owners assume it must be something small. Sometimes it is the board, and one channel of it.

Telling a surge apart from a slow failure

The history is the diagnostic. We ask two questions before we open anything.

Did it stop working during or immediately after a storm, cleanly, with no warning? That is consistent with a transient.

Or has it been getting gradually stranger over weeks or months — intermittent at first, then more often, then permanent? That is not a surge. That is a connection going high-resistance, a sensor drifting out of range, or a relay whose contacts are pitting. Those look like board faults and are not.

The second pattern is much more common than the first, and it is where most unnecessary boards get sold. So we check the harness connections, the sensors and the elements before we accept a board diagnosis, regardless of what the weather did.

Heat and humidity are the quieter half

Storms are the dramatic part. The mundane part is that this is a hot, humid climate for half the year, and electronics age faster in it. A control mounted behind a cooking cavity is living at elevated temperature every time the oven runs. A board in a garage or an outdoor kitchen is living in ambient humidity with no conditioning at all.

That is why appliance electronics in Jacksonville do not last as long as the same parts in a dry, cool climate, and it is honest to say so rather than treat every failure as bad luck.

What we recommend, and what we do not

We recommend surge protection at the panel for a house with several thousand dollars of appliance electronics in one kitchen. It is an electrician’s job, it is not expensive relative to what it protects, and it protects everything rather than one outlet.

We do not recommend replacing working boards preventively, and we do not sell maintenance plans. If your control is behaving, leave it alone.
